HOW TO CHECK YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID
Regular transmission fluid checks are simple to do yourself, especially in our nice Dallas area weather. Regular checks can help prevent engine issues and catch maintenance problems before they become serious, and you end up in a local transmission shop like El Camino.
Our technicians at El Camino suggest you follow these steps:
- Turn the car on and let the engine run before starting–the engine should be warmed up to check the fluid levels.
- To find out whether to turn the engine off or keep the engine running while you check the transmission fluid, be sure to consult your owner’s manual. Some cars will have you check it with the engine off.
- Find your transmission fluid dipstick–usually located towards the front of the engine compartment.
- Checking your fluid quality–This part is a little dirty so have a rag handy. Pull out the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, it’s time to replace the fluid
- Checking the fluid level–Use your rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
- Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to the right spot. Be sure not to overfill it.
If you run into any issues, call the El Camino Transmission professionals in metro Dallas, TX for assistance.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHECK MY TRANSMISSION FLUID?
Check all main fluids monthly: transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and engine oil. You should replace your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on your driving habits, type of transmission, and other factors. Check your owner’s manual for a more specific replacement interval or call the experts at El Camino Transmission for help.
MORE ON TRANSMISSION FLUID
Your transmission is one of the most complex parts of your vehicle. Before you check your transmission fluid, take note:
- Checking the fluid on a manual transmission will usually require a jack to access a plug located beneath the car. We can help with this task if you don’t have room or the right tools.
- Not all transmission fluid is the same, with different types for recent models, manual transmissions, and automatic transmissions. Your owner’s manual will recommend a particular type of transmission fluid.
- If your vehicle hesitates when shifting gears, it might be due to low transmission fluid. However, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. Check the fluid level first, then schedule service with El Camino Transmission today.
